How to protect privacy when chatting with strangers

To limit what you reveal in a stranger chat, check the words you send, the details visible on camera and the information someone could combine across the conversation. Using a nickname or leaving your camera off does not erase the information you choose to share.

It helps to separate privacy toward another participant from the platform's handling of data. They are related questions, but they need different checks.

Notice direct identifiers and combinations of details

A full name, phone number or exact address can identify you directly. Other details may become revealing when combined.

For example, a first name may tell someone little. Add a small workplace, a distinctive job and the days you finish late, and the conversation becomes much more specific. You can discuss work without naming the employer or describing your routine.

Instead of sharing: Your employer and office location

Try a broader answer: The general kind of work you enjoy

Instead of sharing: The station you use every morning

Try a broader answer: A broad interest in commuting, walking or travel

Instead of sharing: Your home address

Try a broader answer: A region, if you want to discuss it at all

Instead of sharing: A social handle linked to your personal profiles

Try a broader answer: Keep talking in the current conversation

These are example boundaries, not a formula that guarantees anonymity. You can also decline the question entirely.

Check what a camera and microphone can reveal

Look at the actual camera view before joining. Move letters, parcels, badges, calendars and work screens out of view. Check mirrors or other reflective surfaces if they show an area you did not intend to share.

Listen to the space too. Someone nearby could say a name or discuss something private. If other people cannot comfortably stay out of the conversation, choose another setting or a different format.

Notifications need a separate check. A notification appearing on your own screen is not automatically visible to the other person, but it could be shown if you hold that screen up to the camera or use a screen-sharing feature. Do not assume that every service has the same sharing behavior.

Keep links and requests separate from trust

You can enjoy talking with someone without opening a file or signing in through a link they provide. If a message claims to come from an account provider, check through its known official website instead. The FTC's phishing guidance explains how deceptive links and attachments can be used to obtain information or deliver harmful software.

You may say, “I do not open downloads during chats,” or “I am not sharing my social profiles.” Moving to another service is a new choice with new privacy settings, not a required next step in a conversation.

What anonymous chat does not promise

Another participant may save, photograph or share information they receive. Even if a service does not offer a recording button, that does not establish that a conversation cannot be captured by other means.

Likewise, encryption of a connection does not establish what either endpoint can save. Mozilla's explanation of transport security describes protection for information while it travels across a network. A claim about secure transmission is different from a claim about storage, account records, moderation material or deletion.

Treat any information you share as something you may lose control of. That does not mean avoiding every personal topic. It means choosing details deliberately rather than relying on a label such as “private” or “anonymous.”

Check Vooz-specific information separately

Read the Vooz Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy for the published information about data handling. The anonymous-chat page explains the participant-facing question, while the Safety page provides reporting guidance.

If you prefer communicating without a camera view, review text chat. Keep the same care with what you type. For preparation beyond privacy, use the session safety checklist.
